Chapter 6

"So. The van's all loaded and Goodwill is aware we're coming," York informed her as he came back into the house and closed the door behind himself.

"Oh, thank you so much for all of your hard work, York. Really. I appreciate it."

"You're very welcome, honey, but I didn't say that so that you would thank me."

"I know."

He came to stand in front of her. "I said it because I want you to pack a bag."

"Do what now?" she asked, gazing up at him, looking perplexed.

"Well, I think you could use some R and R—rest and relaxation."

She snorted. "Fuck yes."

York frowned at her. "You know I don't like to hear that kind of language."

"You're a Marine, aren't you? Isn't that the majority of the kind of language you hear?"

Looking perturbed, as if she'd insulted his precious Corp, he answered, "No, it's not."

"Oh. Hmmm. It appears that all of the Marine movies and television shows ever have been lying to me."

"Yes, well, just because you see it in either of those places, doesn't mean it's accurate."

"You mean I can't knock out a Marine by throwing sand against a wall and telling him to hit the beach?" she asked, blinking innocently up at him.

His growl at her attempt at humor was truly terrifying. "No, you cannot."

"Can I try with you?"

York took a step closer to her and looked down at her intimidatingly. "You can try."

Unfortunately, she wasn't easily intimidated, despite how sore her butt was at the moment. Still, it was probably a good idea to divert him anyway.

"So, why am I packing a bag again?"

"It's a surprise."

Her little couldn't resist surprises, and he knew it.

"Really?"

"Uh huh. Go pack a bag—quick, like a bunny."

She ran into her room.

"How big a bag?"

"I dunno. I have no idea how a woman—who's not a Marine—would pack."

"Where are we going? How many days are we staying?"

"A couple. And not too far away."

"Should I bring a bathing suit? A winter parka? Something formal? What?"

He wandered down the hallway to lean against the door jamb and watch her standing in the middle of her room, with her valise out on the bed, whirling around trying to decide what to put in it.

"What?" she asked again as he looked at her skeptically. "Those are all valid questions."

"No bathing suit, I don't think. Bring layers. Maybe a sweatshirt or sweater. Think casual and comfortable."

She tried to process everything he was telling her and pack as intelligently as she could.

"Do you have anything little you could bring to wear?" he asked, looking through her closet full of clothes.

Angela looked a bit defeated. "I don't. I always wanted to get some stuff, but I didn't want to hear anything from him if he ever found it—not that he was likely to be interested enough in me to bother going through my clothes—but I didn't."

York came to stand next to her, brushing her hair back from her face. "Well, you know you don't need to worry about that with me, I hope. I
